The honest verdict

Tap to pay and QR codes both move a payment from a phone, but through different senses. Tap to pay runs on NFC and the EMV contactless standard: you hold a phone or card to a terminal and a tokenised credential is exchanged over a few centimetres. QR code payments are optical, so a camera reads a printed or displayed code, which needs line of sight and a deliberate scan but almost no hardware. Tap to pay suits certified terminals and speed, while QR suits low cost acceptance across many phones.

What each one is built for

Tap to pay is the contactless rail most people already use. It runs on NFC over a few centimetres and carries a tokenised card under the EMV contactless standard defined by EMVCo, so the real card number is never handed over. Its strength is speed and reach: a deliberate tap, and an acceptance network of certified terminals that is already everywhere.

QR code payments come at it from the other direction. A QR code is optical, read by the phone's camera, and defined as a symbology by GS1. It needs line of sight and a deliberate scan, but it also needs almost no hardware. A code can be printed on a receipt, a menu, or a screen and read by nearly any camera, which is why QR is the low cost way to accept a proximity style payment across many phone models.

Both are deliberate acts at a fixed point, and both work well for what they are. Parousya's patented method starts earlier, at detection. Common questions
